DIY Lace Crop Top Tutorial

DIY Lace Crop Top Tutorial

A DIY Lace Crop Top Sewing Tutorial Using Guipure Lace Fabric

Hello, I’m Allie of allie J. In this tutorial I’ll be walking you through how to make a trendy crop top with a longer lining that you can tuck into a skirt or high-waisted pants. It’s the best of both worlds!

I’m using this beautiful guipure lace in the vineyard design for my outer layer, and a comfortable cotton voile for the interior lining, but you could pick anything you like--this would be lovely for cold weather in a scuba or a damask fabric.

For your pattern, pick any pull-over woven tee pattern with set-in sleeves. I’m using a vintage pattern, Simplicity 3480, but a modern pattern (Grainline’s Scout Tee for example) will work just as well. If you have a cropped length pattern, use the pattern for the cropped layer and lengthen the sides enough to tuck in for the long length lining. If you have a longer blouse pattern that you can tuck in already, use the pattern as is for the lining and shorten it for the fashion fabric layer. Use your pattern to cut out the following pieces:

Fashion fabric:

cropped length front body

cropped length back body

2x sleeve

Lining fabric:

long length front body

long length back body

front neck facing

back neck facing

The trick to this top is all in the order of construction:

1. Sew and press any darts/staystitching necessary for your pattern & interface your neck facing.
2. Sew the fashion fabric side seams, right sides together.
3. Sew the lining fabric side seam, right sides together.
4. Baste the lining and fabric fashion together at the armscye, neckline, and shoulder seams--from now on you will treat the two as a single layer.
Sew shoulder seams, right sides together.

5. Sew shoulder seams, right sides together.

6. Attach sleeves

7. Stitch front neck facing to back neck facing, and attach to neckline of garment, right sides together.
8. Understitch and tack down facing.
9. Finish lining hem--I just serged mine since it will always be tucked in! If you are using lace for your fashion fabric, you’re done! No need to hem. If you are using a different fabric, Hem your sleeves and your fashion fabric.

Wear your new top with a high waisted skirt or pants for a cute but covered retro look!
