Project Description
Learning how to sew with a sewing machine can be an incredibly useful skill. Whether you want to make amazing cosplays, hip clothing, or just simple alterations it may be hard to know where to start. In this Sewing Machine Guide, we will go over the best brands of Sewing Machines. By the time you finish reading this Sewing Machine Guide, you will be a professional seamstress or tailor!
The Sewing Machine:
A sewing machine is a tool used by sewers to combine two pieces of fabric by stitching them with thread. A sewing machine is not necessary to sew, but it is much easier and faster than sewing by hand. Before you buy a machine it’s a good idea to figure out what your budget is and what kind of projects you will be working on. A beginner sewing machine can cost around $80, while more advanced sewing machines can cost over $2,000. There are four big sewing machine brands discussed in this Sewing Machine Guide: Singer, Brother, Janome, and Husqvarna Viking.
Singer:
Singer Sewing Machines are a great mid-level option for any sewing hobbyist. In fact, my very first sewing machine was a basic “essential” Singer, similar to model number 2277. Most Singer Sewing Machines are computerized, meaning you won’t need to press on a foot pedal to start/stop your stitch and cut your thread. To start/stop a stitch or cut thread with a Singer Sewing Machine, all you need to do is press a button. Singer Sewing machines are averagely priced, and of average quality. I recommend Singer Sewing Machines to any beginner, or hobbyist looking for an affordable machine.
Singer Recommendations:

Brother:
Brother Sewing Machines are my absolute favorite brand of sewing machines. My first professional sewing machine was a Brother brand Sewing Machine. Like Singer Sewing Machines, Brother Sewing Machines are also computerized. Additionally, Brother Sewing Machines offer more embroidery settings than other sewing machines. Overall, Brother Sewing Machines are a great option for intermediate sewers. Brother Sewing Machines are average in cost and quality, but for an affordable sewing machine the price to performance ratio is great.
Brother Recommendations:

Janome:
Janome is consistently ranked as one of the best sewing machine manufacturers in the world. Janome Sewing Machines are made with high quality materials and can be used professionally. Janome Sewing Machines can be computerized or have a foot pedal. Additionally, some Janome Sewing Machines have settings to sew embroidered patterns and designs. Janome Sewing machines are a great option for sewing, however they are expensive. If you need a sewing machine for professional use, and price is of no concern, buy a Janome Sewing Machine.
Janome Recommendations:

Husqvarna Viking:
Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines are also rated highly as a sewing machine manufacturer. Owned by the same company that owns Singer, Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines are renowned for their ability to sew through any fabric. Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines have the ability to embroider patterns and designs, but are unique with their Sewing Advisor, Sensor System, and Stitch System features. Basically, Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines are able to sense how and what you’re sewing, and the machine will make adjustments to its settings automatically. It is important to note that Husqvarna Viking is a European company, all measurements and units are measured or written with the metric system. Overall, Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines are top rated machines. While Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines are more expensive, they are comparable to Janome Sewing Machines. If you are a professional sewer, you should consider a Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machine.
Husqvarna Viking Recommendations:

Conclusion:
All sewing machines have pros and cons, and the best sewing machine is subjective to one’s needs. Of all the sewing machines available, Singer, Brother, Janome, & Husqvarna are the ones I have had the best experiences with. Always read reviews and do your research before buying a sewing machine, but most importantly… Have fun!
