A DIY Sheer Curtains Sewing Tutorial Using Sheer Voile Fabric

When it comes to decorating, nothing frames a space like adding curtains to your windows. They can add a pop of color, make a space look taller, and even add a bit of whimsy! A classic look that will never go out of style are sheers: perfect to finish off a room but not block the light to keep a space bright.

Though you can buy white sheers at any home store, you may be limited on length and price. By making your own, you can customize them to the perfect length and width for your windows at a fraction of the cost. This also opens up the possibility of adding on unique details like the pom pom trim shown here which makes the curtains look custom and more interesting!

To make your own curtains, you will want to measure the size of your windows and consider hanging the curtains as high as you can. By hanging your curtains at the top of the windows or even higher down to the floor, it creates the illusion of taller ceilings and a larger space. For the curtains shown here, the curtains were hung from above the window over a set of French doors, making them about 112” long. The curtains are created with a simple pocket style top that slides over a standard curtain rod, but this can be enlarged for any size rod. If you wish to leave the curtains plain, just skip the step about adding on the pom pom trim at the end.

SUPPLIES

Difficulty: Easy

LETS GET STARTED!

Measure the height and width of your window. Add at least 6” to the height and 2” to the width to determine how large each of your curtain panels should be. Cut out your sheer fabric in those measurements to have two equal sized rectangles.

Take your curtains and use a rolled hem presser foot to hem all four edges of the fabric. This will create a neat edge to your curtains and keep them from fraying.

The next step is to create the pocket for your curtain rod. Measure your curtain rod width and add on 2”. Fold the top edge of the fabric over to match this measurement and pin along the edge and about 1” from the top of the fabric.

Sew along these two lines of pins. This creates a pocket with a small amount of fabric at the top to mimic most pocket style curtains you would buy at the store.

To finish the curtains, fold the bottom edge to the back and hem the bottoms to the length you desire.

To add on pom pom trim, pin the trim to the back side of the fabric along the sides starting below the curtain rod pocket so that the pom poms are sticking out on the front. We suggest leaving your pom pom trim as one long roll as you sew and trimming it when you get to the bottom of the curtain so that you don’t accidentally cut the trim too short. Repeat this on the long sides of the curtain panels.

To hang your curtains, just slide the curtain rod into the pocket at the top. There will be a small amount of fabric showing at the top above the curtain rod.

HERE'S HOW IT LOOKS WHEN YOU'RE DONE!

This is a great example of DYI curtains for the inside. Now if you have using drapes for your Custom outdoor curtain I highly recommend that you use waterproof grad curtains. It will make such a difference in the length of time you will be able to use the curtains outside.

I am working with this sheer fabric and am having difficulty cutting the wide width. It is difficult for me to get it folded and flat for cutting. Any suggestions? Am using a cutting board and weights, but still fabric shifts about.
