Well in this tutorial you’ll learn how to make a backdrop that’s perfect for your photos in just 3 easy and simple steps. You’ll be self-shooting in no-time!
Supplies
Here's what you will need!
- 3-4 Yards of White Poplin
- 3 Yards of White Poplin Extra Wide if you want to shoot more than one person
- Sewing Machine
- Matching thread
- Optional (Serger)
Why Poplin:
So why is poplin the best for photos? Firstly, it’s wrinkle resistant and irons easily, so you won’t have to spend a ton of time ironing/steaming before the photoshoot, or photoshopping-out those unsightly creases. When you’re done shooting, you can fold it up and toss it in storage without any worry about a massive amount of prep before your next shoot!
The other main reason is that it photographs beautifully! It appears opaque and absorbs the light, allowing you or the photographer to have total control over the lighting set-up. And worry-not! The weave/texture of the fabric will not be visible at all.
Finally, it’s way more durable than a paper backdrop. Just toss it in the washing machine if it gets dirty!

Cosplay Photoshoot Background Tutorial
STEP 1 Zigzag Stitch
Serge or zigzag stitch along the bottom and top edges of the fabric. You don’t need to do anything to the selvage edges because they don’t fray!
STEP 2 Hem The Edges
Hem the top and bottom edges by folding the serged edge over twice, completely encasing it. Then stitch it down.
STEP 3 Stitch The Edges
Fold the top edge over by 3 inches, and stitch just above your hemmed edge. This will create a channel to easily put it on a backdrop-stand.
And just like that, your backdrop is done. Hang it up on your backdrop stand & have fun taking photos with it!
