How To Sew A Shirt
STEP 1 Get The Pattern
Print out the pattern and tape it together, following the pattern layout given. Add any seam allowances you may need at this point. Please note that the amount of fabric needed may change depending on your measurements. There is a guide included to determine the exact yardage you will need.
STEP 2 Cutting the Pattern
Cut out the pattern pieces as noted by the pattern instructions for your size. Make sure to transfer the markings and notches to your fabric. Interface all of the required pieces.
STEP 3 Front Pocket
First, let's make the front pocket by turning up, the top side of the pocket, over 2-inches. Next, stitch the pocket to the top of the front left side of the shirt using a 3-millimeter stitch length. Fold over the other raw edges of the pocket by 3-millimeters, and then press it with a hot iron.
STEP 4 Shirt Yoke
For the shirt yoke, fold the bottom raw edge over by 3-millimeters and press it with a hot iron.
STEP 6 Sew Bottom Edge Of Yoke
Using a 3-millimeter stitch length, sew the bottom edge of the yoke to the back of the shirt. Next, make two, parallel rows of stitching.
STEP 7 Stitch Side And Top Of Yoke
Baste the side and top edges of the yoke, then stitch them by hand.
STEP 8 Stitch Shirt Pieces
Pin the front and back pieces of the shirt together, then stitch them together by using a 3-millimeter stitch length.
STEP 9 Stitch The Sleeves
Pin the back and front of the sleeves together and stitch them with 3-millimeter stitch length. Be sure to leave 3-inches open from the bottom.
STEP 10 Hem Sleeve Edges
Narrow hem the open edges of the sleeves using a 3-millimeter stitch length.
STEP 11 Attach Sleeves To Shirt
Pin both sleeves to the shirt and stitch them with a 3-millimeter stitch length.
STEP 12 Close Sleeves & Shirt
Next, let’s close the sleeves and the shirt. To do this, fold over and pin the shirt from the cuff down to the bottom and stitch it with a 3-millimeter stitch length.
STEP 13 Press Cuff Pieces
Fold the top of the non-interfaced cuff piece down by 1-inch, and press it with a hot iron.
STEP 14 Stitch The Cuff Pieces
Pin the cuff pieces together with their right sides facing each other, and stitch the side and bottom edges together with a 3-millimeter stitch length. Be sure to leave the top part open.
STEP 15 Pin Cuff To Sleeve Bottom
Pin the interfaced side of the cuff to the sleeve bottom piece. Leave the piece with a folded edge free.
STEP 16 Stitch Cuff To Sleeve
Stitch the cuff onto the bottom of the sleeve with a 3-millimeter stitch length.
STEP 17 Press & Pin Raw Edge
Press the raw edge down, towards the bottom edge of the sleeve. Next pin the folded edge of the cuff over to encase the raw edge.
STEP 18 Sew & Close The Cuff
Use a 3-millimeter stitch length to sew the cuff closed. Ensure that the raw edge is encased within the cuff.
STEP 19 Hem The Shirt Bottom Edge
Roll hem the bottom edge of the shirt with a 3-millimeter stitch length.
STEP 20 Bottom Placket
To create the button placket, first fold over the unnotched edge of the black piece by ½-inch and press it with a hot iron.
